Reading Group, week one: Socrates on trial
Last Thursday forty-one of us (students, tutors and one very patient dog) gathered on screen for the first meeting of the Latimer Reading Group.
We began, as all good things should, with Plato’s Apology: Socrates’ speech at his trial in 399 BC. Why would a man choose death rather than stop asking questions? Is the unexamined life really not worth living? Isn’t that a rather harsh thing to say about most people?
The conversation ran twenty minutes over and nobody seemed to mind. Next week: the Crito. Should Socrates escape from prison?
